BaZi Fundamentals.
Core vocabulary for reading any chart — structural intelligence about how you command, where you weaken, and what the field supports. Not fortune-telling.
Four Pillars
- 年
Year
Macro context, long-range field
- 月
Month
Strategic nature, seasonal effort
- 日
Day
Commanded self, core decision-maker
- 時
Hour
Hidden leverage, late-game moves
Your birth chart decodes into elements, timing, and strategic position across these four pillars. It reveals recurring patterns — where you hold advantage and where friction needs structure. It does not predict events.
Day Master
The Day stem (日主) is your command identity. Everything else is read relative to it.
- Strong — carries pressure, initiates; risk overextension
- Weak — wins through allies and timing; risk burnout in head-on fights
- Balanced — flexible; success depends on phase, not force
Five Elements
木
Wood
Momentum, initiation
火
Fire
Visibility, speed
土
Earth
Stability, ground
金
Metal
Precision, structure
水
Water
Adaptation, flow
Production: Wood → Fire → Earth → Metal → Water → Wood. Control: Wood → Earth → Water → Fire → Metal → Wood.
Excess = overused strength. Deficiency = gap to cover by skill, partner, or timing.
Animal Branches
Twelve branch animals (地支) modify terrain — not horoscope personality. Month branch sets seasonal context. Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig — each carries its own element and its own tactical read against your Day Master. Your chart shows which branches you're working with and what they mean for you specifically; the full branch-by-branch tactical breakdown is part of the read, not a lookup table.
Ten Gods
Ten Gods (十神) classify stems relative to your Day Master — functions, not moral labels. They range from Friend and Direct Resource (support, stability) to Seven Killings and Hurting Officer (pressure, disruption) — ten distinct roles a chart can hand you, each with a different tactical function. Which ones dominate your chart, and what that means for how you operate, is what BaZiWar reads for you.
Useful & Unfavorable Elements
Useful elements (用神) reinforce; unfavorable (忌神) amplify imbalance under pressure — neither is inherently bad.
- Weak Day Master — favor producing/matching elements; reduce controlling/draining ones
- Strong Day Master — favor output and wealth; too much reinforcement creates rigidity
- Season — month branch sets temperature; useful elements shift with season and phase
Structural Rules
- Seasonal strength — elements gain/lose power by birth month
- Rooting — stems with branch support act with follow-through
- Combinations & clashes — merges bind; clashes force movement
- Hidden stems — branches contain sub-elements
- Luck phases — 10-year pillars shift the field
- Relative reading — every symbol read against Day Master strength and current phase
Phase Cycles & Alignment
- 10-year windows — amplify some elements, dampen others
- Dominance — push forward · Consolidation — defend · Transition — reposition
- Alignment — reinforcing elements compound with less energy
- Contradiction — opposing elements create friction; design around it
How to Read a Chart, in Four Steps
-
Four Pillars
Enter birth date and time. Year, Month, Day, Hour — your complete tactical profile.
-
Element Distribution
Count Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water across pillars. Concentration = dominance; absence = gap to cover.
-
Alignments & Contradictions
Where decisions flow easily, where friction repeats, where external support closes gaps fastest.
-
Current Phase
Inside 10-year windows: what dominates, what is weakened, when the next shift arrives.
